Dear Colleagues,
I am very excited to share some excellent news: Brendan Saloner, Ph.D. will join the School of Public Health as professor of Health Services, Policy and Practice on July 1, 2025.
Brendan received his Ph.D. in health policy from Harvard University and comes to us from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, where he is Bloomberg Professor of American Health in the Department of Health Policy and Management. He also serves as the director of the Health Policy and Management Department’s Ph.D. program and director of practice at the Johns Hopkins Center for Mental Health and Addiction Policy Research.
Brendan is one of the leading scholars on policy interventions that improve health outcomes for underserved populations. Much of his work has focused on overdose and those who use substances such as opioids. Further, he has done groundbreaking work on carceral health, focusing on improving care for incarcerated people with substance use disorders.
His addition to our faculty will substantially strengthen the excellent work that is already happening at our school on how best to address the overdose crisis. He will play a key role in the Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies, leading work on substance use policy and promotion of evidence-based harm reduction and treatment policy. I am particularly excited about Brendan’s focus on ensuring we translate the science of better managing opioid use disorder into practice and policy.
The strength of our School of Public Health is our people, and I’m thrilled to announce this next addition to our outstanding faculty. Thank you to our Office of Faculty Affairs for leading our ambitious recruitment efforts this year and to the search committee, chaired by Professor Michael Silverstein, for identifying and helping recruit Professor Saloner to Brown.
Please join me in welcoming Brendan to our community.
Sincerely,
Ashish K. Jha, M.D., MPH
