To our SPH community,
I am extremely pleased to announce that Brandon Marshall Ph.D., has been appointed chair of the Department of Epidemiology at the Brown University School of Public Health, effective February 1, 2024. In addition to this new role as chair, Brandon will continue to serve as director for the Center for Epidemiologic Research.
We all know Brandon and his accomplishments well. He received his doctoral degree in epidemiology from the School of Population and Public Health at the University of British Columbia and completed postdoctoral training at Columbia University. Brandon has been an active and productive member of our faculty since 2012. During his time here, Brandon has exemplified the spirit of scholarship, mentorship, collaboration and service that defines our School of Public Health. He has driven groundbreaking, community-focused research to prevent overdose in Rhode Island: not only with our People, Place & Health Collective, but also as an expert advisor to The Governor’s Overdose Prevention and Intervention Task Force, scientific director of PreventOverdoseRI and member of the state’s opioid settlement advisory committee.
Brandon has been a prolific scholar, having published more than 300 peer-reviewed publications. He is undoubtedly one of the leading substance use epidemiologists in the country. Beyond his scholarship, his creativity, collaboration and leadership have earned him the respect and admiration of students, staff and colleagues alike across our school and university.
I am excited that Brandon's leadership will usher in a new era of growth and excellence to an already superb Department of Epidemiology. There is no doubt that his passion for innovative research, commitment to academic excellence, and proven leadership skills make him an outstanding choice for this important role.
Please join me in congratulating him on his well-deserved appointment.
Sincerely,
Ashish K. Jha M.D., MPH
