In a time of political and social uncertainty, one thing remains clear: the enduring value of public health rooted in science and driven by impact. Public health equips us to meet urgent challenges with evidence, compassion and urgency. From the health effects of climate change, to the ongoing toll of substance use, to emerging threats from dangerous biological agents—the need for rigorous science and bold leadership has never been greater. Education and research are at the core of our mission because this work—your work—advances health for all.
Our greatest strength is our people. Across disciplines and roles, our faculty, staff, students and alumni lead with determination, resilience and creativity. I am deeply grateful for the many ways you contribute—in classrooms and labs, in communities and behind the scenes—to our mission of learning public health by doing public health.
This is a place where asking hard questions is encouraged, where diverse perspectives deepen understanding and where collaboration drives change. I urge you to carry that spirit into the year ahead: be curious, stay engaged, welcome discomfort and seek out ideas different from your own. Now more than ever, we need a community that thrives on diversity of thought and perspective.
I look forward to kicking off the year with you on Thursday, September 16, at 4 p.m. at our State of the School and Welcome Reception.
Here’s to a great year ahead.
Sincerely,

Ashish K. Jha, M.D., MPH
